GO DUTCH in 2013!

Auch in diesem Schuljahr soll es wieder den Begegnungsaustausch mit einer Klasse unserer Partnerschule in Groningen geben. Schüler unserer Schule können an diesem Schulaustausch teilnehmen, wenn Sie gegenwärtig die Stufe E1 besuchen.

Die Schule Zernike College  ist eine der renommiertesten Schulen in Nordholland. Sie ist ähnlich aufgebaut wie der Höchster Schulverbund, d.h. sie hat verschiedene Orte für unterschiedliche Alterstufen und einen zusätzlichen Montessorizweig. Der Hauptsitz befindet sich in dem Vorort Haren, südöstlich von Groningen.

Der Austausch ist nun Teil des europäischen Projektes der holländischen  Schule. Dabei gehen alle Klassen des Jahrgangs in dieser Woche auf Tour zu den Partnerschulen von Italien bis Irland. In einer weiteren Woche im Frühjahr 2014 kommen dann alle Partnerklassen zu einer europäischen  Kulturwoche nach Groningen.

Die holländische Klasse wird im Oktober 2013 nach Frankfurt/M kommen und wir werden nach den Osterferien für eine Woche nach Holland fahren. Ein genaueres Programm wird Ihnen zeitnah vorgelegt. Während des Aufenthaltes wird die „Geschäftssprache“ überwiegend Englisch sein.

Dutch German Student Exchange 2013

14 FDG students and two teachers spent a week with their exchange partners of Zernike College Groningen, the Netherlands, from April 21st – 26th.
During that week, the whole group learned a lot about the Netherlands and they visited some interesting places, such as the recently re-opened Amsterdam Rijksmuseum, the Woudagemaal (a UNESCO heritage site: a big machinery, built to pump the water out of the inner country) and a huge open-air village-like museum. The students also attended lessons at school with exchange students from other countries, about different topics, such as “Typically Dutch”, “Geography of the Netherlands” etc.

Wednesday was “International Day”, and the Dutch students had to give a presentation (in co-operation with their exchange students) about a topic of their choice, for example: German Rap, German History, or similar.The presentations were completely organized and performed by the students themselves, with no help of a teacher or guide, in front of a room full of middle school students.

Apart from the educational activities, the students had free time, which they used to get to know each other better and learn about each other’s cultures and habits.
After five exciting days, they celebrated a farewell-party at the “Kokomo Beach Club” and then returned to Germany the following day.                                  By D.R.

New Prep Courses for Cambridge Exams

Mit Beginn des Schuljahres 2013/2014 werden am Friedrich-Dessauer-Gymnasium wieder vorbereitende Kurse für das Cambridge Advanced Exam und das Business English Certificate angeboten. Dieses Angebot richtet sich an die gegenwärtige E2-Stufe.

Diese Sprachprüfungen sind für interessierte Schüler mit guten bis sehr guten Kenntnissen in Englisch gedacht und entsprechen der Stufe C1 des Gemeinsamen Europäischen Referenzrahmens für moderne Sprachen. Das CAE fokussiert dabei auf „general English“ und das BEC auf Wirtschaftsenglisch. Nach bestandener Prüfung erhalten die Schüler ein Zertifikat, welches weltweit sowohl im Beruf als auch im Studium als aussagekräftige Qualifikation anerkannt wird. Praktisch alle Universitäten in Großbritannien und den USA, den englischsprachigen Ländern und sehr viele deutsche oder internationale Unternehmen erkennen diese Zertifikate an.

Anmeldeschluss ist am 30. April 2013!

Die Eingangsprüfung findet am 27. Mai 2013 statt (nicht am 20.5.)!

22 Schülerinnen und Schüler erhalten Cambridge-Zertifikate

Eineinhalb Jahre lang haben sich 22 Schülerinnen und Schüler des Friedrich-Dessauer-Gymnasiums mit ihren Kursleitern Meike Bär und Holger Barske vorbereitet, bevor sie die mündlichen und schriftlichen Sprachprüfungen der University of Cambridge ablegten. Sie erhielten nun die begehrten Zertifikate des Cambridge Advanced English (CAE) und Business English (BEC) in Anwesenheit der Schulleiterin Frau Claudia Hemmling.

Die Schülerinnen und Schüler erhalten die CAE- und BEC-Zertifikate.

Hinter ihnen liegen intensive Schulungen in den zu prüfenden Fertigkeiten speaking, listening, writing, reading und English in use – ein intensives sprachliches Rundumtraining, welche sie mit viel Engagement zu später Stunde im Anschluss an den regulären Unterricht absolvierten.

Fast jeder zehnte Schüler des Friedrich-Dessauer-Gymnasiums in Frankfurt-Höchst legt inzwischen eine der bei englischen Universitäten und vielen international ausgerichteten Unternehmen anerkannten Prüfungen ab. Die eintägige Prüfung fand im von der University of Cambridge autorisiertem Prüfungszentrum bei der Provadis GmbH statt, einem Authorised Platinum Centre mit starkem Wachstum und viel Engagement.

Glenn Colquhoun reads his poetry at FDG

Glenn Colquhoun, an author and poet from New Zealand, visited Germany to attend the Frankfurt Book Fair. New Zealand was the Guest of Honour at this year’s book fair. On 10 October 2012 Mr Colquhoun stopped by the Friedrich-Dessauer-Gymnasium for a one-hour reading session.
After introducing himself, Mr Colquhoun talked about his personal life, explaining his family situation, and his working life.
He showed us souvenirs from New Zealand: Several dried and painted pumpkins – called „gourds“ – have an important place and meaning in Maori culture. Mr Colquhoun invited the students to choose a gourd. He would then read out, or better, “perform“ the poems which he had written on the gourds. The poems told the story of the journey of the German doctor and author “Ernst Diefenbach” to New Zealand and how he was overcome by the beauty and culture of the country. At the end, Mr Colquhoun read out some of his other poems in which he processes memories and feelings of his own.
Glenn Colquhon presented his poetry in an interesting and emotional way. Not only did he answer our questions, but he also made sure that what he said “makes sense”.
He gave the students a magnificent look into the life and problems of a doctor and poet, explaining to his audience the gratification his choice of work gives him.
Due to his gestures and the emotional emphasis he laid on the presentation of his work, it was a true pleasure for me to listen to him. At the same time I was delighted by his charisma and positive thinking. Mr Colquhoun also demonstrated to me a new perspective of poetry, that it can bring relief and peace of mind to the reader and his passion for the world of writing consumed me.
It was unfortunate though, that the reading session was so short. Many of the students were quite inspired and entertained and it would have been nice had there been the possibility to ask more questions. All in all, I think the reading session was a full success. It changed my view of poetry and I would enjoy reading more poems from Mr Colquhoun and would even like to visit New Zealand. (LM)

DUTCH STUDENTS IN FRANKFURT

Fifteen Dutch students and their two teachers visited Friedrich-Dessauer-Gymnasium and their exchange partners during a week-long intercultural student exchange in October 2012.

Visits of Frankfurt Cathedral, museums and Frankfurt’s Maintower, workshops and sports competitions were part of the program as well as a trip to the Rheingau area around Ruedesheim.

FDG students will pay a return visit to Groningen in April 2013.
